Course Overview
Re-thinking will for a metamodern age
After the excesses of modernity, the will is avoided in psychological, philosophical, and spiritual discourse. However, the great third other to love and intelligence (cognition, emotion, and volition) still plays a central role in the question of what relationship we have to ourselbves, others and the future. In this course, we will renew and revitalize the discourse on the will.
You will learn to:
What do we need to do to shift our attention from world/self mapping to action-mapping?
Three stages of will
Characteristics of a will after postmodernity
Can we - in the domain of psyche - find a selfevidend truth?
What can we observe: What is observation; how is observation linked to action?
Hegel, Fichte and Schopenhauer (and a little bit of Nietzsche).
Ways of framing will: modern and postmodern forms of understanding will and volition
Course Structure
Class I: "What is out there - what is in here?"
November 23th, 6 PM CET
The first class will address questions like: what is consciousness and what can we observe? Where exactly is the boundary between inside and outside? We lay the groundwork for an understanding of the psychological phenomena and ulitmately an understanding of the will: Observation, and it´s stages.
Class II: "How we came here?"
November 30th, 6 PM CET
The second class will address the issue of the will: What did previous thinkers think about will, how do we think about will today? Do we have cognitive dissonances about the will, and our future?
Class III: "Observing the will"
December 7th 6 PM CET
The third class will delve into the relationship between observation and will; outline stages of will.
Class IV: "Real live"
December 14th, 6 PM CET
The fourth class will delve into real live applications of a deeper understanding will; the purpose of philosophy,

Tom Amarque
